Improving Your Scars with Dermatix

Numerous well-conducted scientific studies have shown that silicone reliably improves virtually all scars. For decades now, solid silicone sheeting has been an important part of the management of burns scars. More recently, liquid silicone gels have become available and have been shown to work as well as solid silicone sheets but with far greater convenience and ease of use.

Silicones decrease the risk that scars will become hypertrophic or keloid (ie raised above the skin and lumpy) and are an important part of the management of already hypertrophic and keloid scars. Silicones also accelerate or speed up the maturation or settling down of scars, and so increase the rate at which redness (or erythema) leaves the scar. Please note that silicones will not improve depressed (sunken below the skin level) or widespread (stretched to a significant width) scars. Rarely, and this can occur after any surgery at all, further scar revision surgery may be necessary. If you are unhappy with the appearance of your scars once six months has elapsed, please contact our rooms for a further consultation with your plastic surgeon (with no out-of-pocket costs to you) to discuss your concerns.

For surgery on the face, we strongly recommend the use of Dermatix as soon as your stitches are removed, and we would advise that you continue to use Dermatix as a twice-daily routine for a period of three to six months following surgery. Dermatix is safe to use on all skin types and may be used on the face. Do not use on any open wounds. Care should be taken to avoid the eyes and mucous membranes.
