Our Philosophy on Hyperhidrosis
At Vie by Fraser Kirk, we understand the physical discomfort that hyperhidrosis or excessive sweating can cause. Our approach is to use the latest evidence-based treatments to manage symptoms, aiming to reduce sweat production.
Under the guidance of Dr Grant Fraser Kirk, we evaluate each case of hyperhidrosis with a detailed medical assessment to determine the underlying causes and the appropriate treatment options. We believe in a holistic approach that not only addresses the physical symptoms but also considers the impact of hyperhidrosis on the quality of life of our clients. Our treatments are customised to each individual’s needs.
Education is a key component of our treatment philosophy. We ensure that our clients are fully informed about their condition and the various treatment options available. This empowers them to make knowledgeable decisions about their health.
What Causes Hyperhidrosis
Hyperhidrosis is characterised by excessive sweating that can affect daily activities and quality of life. This condition is caused by overactive sweat glands and is divided into two main types: primary and secondary hyperhidrosis. Primary hyperhidrosis is idiopathic, meaning it has no discernible medical cause, and typically affects localised areas such as the underarms, palms, or feet. Genetic factors often play a role in this type, suggesting a hereditary predisposition to the condition.
Secondary hyperhidrosis is a type of excessive sweating that is caused by various underlying health issues or as a side effect of certain medications. This type of hyperhidrosis can occur over larger body areas or even the entire body, unlike the localised form seen in primary cases. Common health-related triggers of secondary hyperhidrosis include diabetes, thyroid disorders, infections, and conditions affecting the nervous system. In addition, certain medications, especially those affecting the sympathetic nervous system, can also cause excessive sweating.
The mechanism behind primary hyperhidrosis involves an overstimulation of the sympathetic nervous system, particularly the nerves responsible for triggering the sweat glands. This overactivity can be exacerbated by factors such as emotional stress, anxiety, or physical activities that typically trigger normal sweating. For secondary hyperhidrosis, excessive sweating is a symptom of the body’s response to an underlying condition, making it crucial to identify and treat the root cause to effectively manage and potentially alleviate the sweating. Understanding these distinctions is essential for providing targeted and effective treatment for individuals suffering from hyperhidrosis.
What to Expect from Hyperhidrosis Treatment
At Vie by Fraser Kirk, our approach involves a comprehensive consultation with medical professionals who examine the client’s symptoms and medical history in detail. This examination helps us to develop a personalised treatment plan based on the client’s specific needs and desired outcomes.
We offer a range of treatment options, including prescription antiperspirants, oral medications, injections, and surgical procedures for severe cases. We carefully select the most appropriate option based on the client’s condition and preferences. For example, a substance can be injected into areas of excessive sweating. This procedure involves a series of injections administered to temporarily block the chemical signals that activate sweat glands. As a result, less sweat is produced, thus offering symptom relief.
It is important to keep in mind that the effectiveness of each treatment may vary, depending on factors such as the degree of sweating, the root cause of excessive sweating, and adherence to post-treatment instructions. Regular follow-up appointments are essential to our approach. This enables us to monitor progress closely and adjust the treatment plan as needed. Our dedicated team provides ongoing support and adjustments to achieve the desired level of sweat reduction.
How Many Sessions Will I Need?
The number of sessions needed for hyperhidrosis treatment depends on the severity of the condition and the type of treatment chosen. For instance, the injection of a substance that blocks the chemical signals that activate sweat glands can provide relief from sweating for approximately 6 to 12 months, but subsequent sessions are often required to maintain the effect over time.
If you opt for prescription antiperspirants or oral medications, your treatment plan may involve ongoing sessions with adjustments based on how well they work and any side effects experienced. Surgical options like sympathectomy offer a more permanent solution, but they’re usually reserved for severe cases where other treatments haven’t been effective. During a sympathectomy, the surgeon interrupts or cuts the sympathetic nerves that control sweating in specific areas of the body, typically the hands, armpits, or face. This results in sweat reduction in the treated area.
During your initial consultation at our clinic, we’ll outline the expected treatment course and schedule. This information will help you plan your treatment effectively and understand the commitment needed to achieve the desired level of sweat reduction.
Potential Associated Risks
While treatments for hyperhidrosis offer relief, they also come with potential risks and side effects that must be considered. Antiperspirants, for instance, can lead to skin irritation or dermatitis, while oral medications may cause systemic issues such as dry mouth, blurred vision, or urinary retention. Injections can also lead to muscle weakness, bruising, swelling, allergic reactions, infection, nerve damage, or discomfort at the injection site.
Surgical interventions carry even higher risks, including the possibility of developing compensatory sweating in other parts of the body, infection, allergic reaction to anaesthesia, changes in skin sensation, or nerve damage. To mitigate these risks, we employ a meticulous approach. We begin by conducting thorough evaluations of each client’s medical history and current condition to ensure they are suitable candidates for treatment. This includes discussing previous surgeries, current medications, or any medical conditions that can affect the outcome of hyperhidrosis treatment. In addition, we utilise the latest treatment techniques to minimise potential complications during procedures.
Furthermore, our commitment to safety extends to the post-treatment phase, where we provide detailed aftercare instructions to promote healing and reduce the likelihood of adverse effects. Throughout the entire treatment journey, our experienced medical team continuously monitors our clients for any signs of complications. In the rare event that issues arise, we take immediate action to manage them promptly. By prioritising safety and efficacy at every step, we strive to provide our clients with high standards of care while achieving the treatment goals.
