Our facial volume restoration treatments (also known as dermal fillers), performed by Dr. Fraser Kirk or our experienced nurses, are highly tailored to each individual’s needs.

We aim for results that suit each patient’s unique features, as opposed to a one-size-fits-all approach. We offer both non-surgical and surgical treatments, allowing our patients to select an option that best aligns with their needs and expectations.

At Vie by Fraser Kirk on the Sunshine Coast, we take a comprehensive approach to our treatments, ensuring that every patient leaves our clinic with a deeper understanding of their skin’s needs and the causes behind certain skin conditions.

Our Philosophy on Volume Restoration

Dr Grant Fraser Kirk and our team of skilled nurses believe that volume restoration should not only add volume but should also address the overall harmony of the face. Our treatments are customised to each individual, taking into account their unique facial anatomy and aesthetic goals.

We emphasise a conservative approach that involves careful assessment of the facial structures and targeted application of treatments to areas that benefit most from volume restoration. Our philosophy is to proceed gradually, assessing the effects of the treatment incrementally. This method allows us to achieve subtle changes.

Education is a cornerstone of our practice at Vie by Fraser Kirk. During consultations, we provide detailed explanations of the available options for volume restoration, including their benefits and limitations. This ensures that our clients are well informed about the procedures they choose and understand the realistic outcomes they can expect from their treatment.

Various Methods of Facial Volume Restoration

Facial volume restoration can be achieved through several methods, each suited to different needs and preferences. At Vie by Fraser Kirk on the Sunshine Coast, we offer a range of both surgical and non-surgical options. Our non-surgical method involves a long-lasting facial volume treatment that can precisely target specific areas of the face.

For more permanent solutions, we provide surgical options such as fat grafting. This procedure involves transferring fat from another area of the body to the face. This not only adds volume but also changes skin texture, as fat contains stem cells that can promote regeneration of the overlying skin.

Each method has its specific advantages, and choosing the right one depends on the client’s aesthetic goals, the areas that require volume, and their preference for temporary versus permanent solutions. Our team is dedicated to guiding clients through these choices, helping them select the option that best suits their needs and lifestyle.

Areas of the Face That Lose Volume

Volume loss in the face is a common concern as we age and can occur in several key areas. The cheeks are often the most noticeable area where volume diminishes over time. Loss of cheek volume can make nasolabial folds more prominent. The under-eye area, or tear troughs, is another common site for age-related volume loss, resulting in indentations.

The temporal regions on the sides of the forehead can also experience significant volume loss, leading to indentations that affect the overall shape of the face. Similarly, the lips and the area around the mouth lose volume with age, leading to more pronounced lines around the mouth. Restoring volume in these areas can address facial asymmetry.

Understanding where volume loss occurs helps in effectively targeting these areas during volume restoration treatments. Our practitioners at Vie by Fraser Kirk conduct a detailed patient assessment first to identify and address these areas.

Reasons for Facial Volume Restoration

Clients seek facial volume restoration for various reasons, each driven by distinct aesthetic or medical needs. They may want the treatment to address signs of facial ageing. As individuals age, their skin naturally loses collagen and elastin, the proteins responsible for keeping skin firm and resilient. Simultaneously, the subcutaneous fat that helps maintain the facial contour diminishes. This combination leads to a decrease in facial volume, which can manifest as descending skin, indentations, and more pronounced wrinkles and folds.

Beyond ageing, facial volume restoration can serve important reconstructive purposes. For individuals with facial asymmetries, whether due to congenital conditions, medical treatments, or injuries, volume restoration can help address facial asymmetry. Procedures aimed at adding volume can address irregularities and change overall facial harmony, which may also aid in functional issues related to these asymmetries. Individuals may also want volume restoration to address facial changes after significant weight loss. Rapid or extensive weight reduction often leads to loss of facial fat. In addition, some individuals may also want facial volume restoration to achieve a particular look.

In all cases, choosing the right approach to volume restoration involves a detailed consultation with a qualified specialist who can recommend treatments tailored to the individual’s unique facial structure, skin condition, and aesthetic goals.

Facial Volume Treatment Consultation

To find out if you are a suitable candidate for a specific type of facial volume treatment, you’ll need to have a consultation at Vie by Fraser Kirk on the Sunshine Coast. After discussing your needs and treatment expectations, we can assess the specific areas of volume loss and how they may have influenced the overall structure of the face.

We’ll also need to take a comprehensive look at your medical history to rule out any underlying conditions that could be contraindications to your treatment. This includes evaluating any previous cosmetic procedures, medications you’re taking, and any chronic illnesses you may have. We’ll also discuss any lifestyle factors, such as smoking or alcohol consumption, that may impact healing or interfere with the treatment’s effectiveness.

Suitable candidates will need to be in good health and not pregnant or breastfeeding. We will also screen for active skin conditions, such as infections or rashes in the treatment area, as these will typically need to be resolved first.

Once we determine that you are a suitable candidate for facial volume restoration treatment, we can create a personalised treatment plan specifically tailored to your unique needs.

We can then discuss preparation and aftercare instructions, any possible risks, and answer any further questions you have about the treatment.

Facial Volume Restoration Aftercare

Your aftercare process will depend on the type of facial volume treatment you have had – particularly, whether it was surgical or non-surgical.

We’ll need to thoroughly discuss aftercare steps during your consultation since each treatment plan will also be tailored to each patient’s unique needs.

Generally, after non-surgical facial volume restoration, you’ll need to avoid touching, pressing, or massaging the treated areas for at least 48 hours. During this time, it’s also advised to stay hydrated, as this supports the healing process, and avoid alcohol, which can increase swelling and slow down recovery. For a few days after your treatment, you’ll be advised to avoid strenuous exercise, as this may increase swelling and irritation. Exposure to excessive heat, such as in saunas or hot showers, should also be avoided, as well as excessive sun exposure. Be sure to use a high-SPF sunscreen when going outside, as the skin may be more sensitive to sun exposure after treatment.

To help the swelling subside, you can try sleeping on your back with an extra pillow to keep your head slightly elevated and applying an ice pack for short intervals (usually about five to ten minutes at a time).

It’s also important to avoid heavy makeup or skincare products on the treated area for at least 24 hours to prevent irritation. Be gentle with your skincare routine, using mild cleansers and moisturisers, and avoid exfoliating products or products with strong formulas until your skin has fully recovered.

As the treated area recovers, you should monitor any unusual symptoms, like persistent pain, uneven swelling or signs of infection, and contact us as soon as possible should you experience any concerning signs.

Instructions for surgical treatments will be similar, but generally, recovery will be more extensive than with a non-surgical treatment. Your instructions will include extra steps to care for the incision site, minimise scarring, and prevent possible complications that can occur after surgery. Recovery time will typically be longer than for non-surgical volume restoration treatments, and you’ll likely need a follow-up appointment to monitor your recovery at some stage after your treatment.

It’s best to refer to the instructions that we will provide during your consultation, based on the details of your specific treatment.

Potential Associated Risks

Non-surgical treatments can cause temporary side effects, including redness, swelling, and bruising in the treatment area. More serious, though rare, complications might include allergic reactions, granulomas (small areas of inflammation caused by a collection of immune cells), or even vascular occlusion, potentially leading to tissue death or other serious outcomes. Infection is another risk, although rare, that can occur if the treatments are not administered in a sterile environment or if post-treatment care instructions are not properly followed. Asymmetry and lumps or irregularities can also occur, sometimes requiring further treatment to reverse or adjust the treatment’s results.

Surgical options for volume restoration provide more permanent solutions but carry greater risks. These risks include infection, scarring, nerve damage that could lead to numbness or changes in sensation, and haematoma, a pocket of blood that resembles a large bruise. There is also the risk of an adverse reaction to anaesthesia, which can lead to various complications, some of which may be severe. Dissatisfaction with aesthetic outcomes is another potential risk, particularly if there is a misalignment between client expectations and what is feasibly achievable through surgery.

At Vie by Fraser Kirk, we address these concerns by conducting thorough pre-treatment consultations where we outline all potential risks and explain how we mitigate them. Our clinic adheres to the standards of clinical practice and patient care, ensuring all procedures are carried out by qualified professionals. We maintain rigorous post-procedure protocols, providing detailed aftercare instructions to our clients and scheduling follow-up appointments to monitor recovery and respond promptly to any concerns. Our commitment to client care extends beyond the treatment room, ensuring that each client’s journey towards recovery is well-supported.
